While I wait for my book to come in I'm doodling some ideas...I want an "old" man. Here is a sketch; I've made puppets before but none using foam (except to keep the head shape). Sooooo, I'm going to get my feet wet! Am I creating in the drawing anything that would be "impossible'? Also if you have any old man pics of puppets that you've made would you share? I posted this in puppet building because it is my first step - concept drawing. Thanks, Dennis

Dennis, I don't see anything really that is going to be that big an issue for you. The only thing that may catch you up depending on how you are visualizing things in three dimension would be the width of your mouth. The mouth on a puppet like this needs to be wider to operate. You can hide that width to some extent. When you get the book you'll notice on the front cover (unless it has changed recently) a puppet on the front cover that has jowls. You have to make sure you don't interfere with the operation of the mouth but these "jowls" can be extended down to give the line you want. Gee I hope that makes sense. Once you get the book I think it well. P.S. Duh.... yep it is still the same picture on the front of the book... in fact it is also used as the logo for the forum and site!

Thanks Shawn...funny running into you here...lol. I might be able to live without the "jowls"...if he looks old...maybe some additional wrinkles here or there.
I guess the first one will be an experiment...
I was reading your replies on foam types also...on P&S...I might just try some Joanne's Fabrics Foam to get a feel for construction techniques...reticulated is soooo expensive.
Thanks again for your input...always appreciated.
Dennis

If you can, please post pictures of your progress while you are building. We love seeing characters in progress! Good luck, and happy foaming!

Oh yes I know that Dennis has come along quite nicely on this project and posted images over at Puppets and Stuff. I'll remind him that he has the post over here also. I'll go ahead and post one of the recent images he has shared with us over there till he can get by and post more. P.S. I think maybe he decided to use a pattern on this instead of the Nip and Tuck method so that may be why he has not posted here again.

I just got back from AC Moore and bought these doll eyes to replace my felt pupils...I think they look pretty good. What do you guys think? They are just taped on right now... Thanks, Dennis

We use a lot of doll eyes on our puppets. It's part of our philosophy that a puppet's eyes should reflect light, as real eyes do. We also sometimes use marbles, buttons, bits of plastic-- anything, really!
